NIOH Archive

NIOH/NHLS is in a process of setting up an archive.  Documenting historical activities of the organisation over the period of time. We wish to collect any records/items that demonstrate how the NIOH/NHLS has evolved and developed over time. The focus period is 1912 to current year; any items you wish to donate to the archive will be accepted and appraised by the Archivist.

What are we going to archive?
  • Historical Papers: focus is on primary sources (manuscripts, field notes, unpublished reports)
  • Historical papers can also be any paper material with a natural historical integrity, including personal papers, loose papers, some printed ephemera (cards), autographed letters, posters and personal papers relating to medical practitioners and related health profession in South Africa.
  • Obsolete instruments that were used over certain periods of time and how they changed/improved
  • Slides, some x-rays, sample some registers,
  • Newspaper cuttings on health, occupational health, communicable diseases etc
  • Rare books will be taken care of as our special collection.
  • Photographs
Benefits of the Archives
1.The Archives allow harvesting to past projects, activities.
2.Archives will provide evidence of the historical development, and changes of the organisation over time.
3.Archives  document fully and preserve the character and identity of the organisation.( Institutional Memory)
4.Archives are preserved for cultural and historical reasons.(Archives tell our stories)
5.Archives give an identity and integrity to an organisation. (who we are, Where we come from,  our heritage)

What/ where can the Archive Collection be used for?
Ø  The archives can be used for research.
Ø  Archival collections can be used in displays (exhibitions), research, education, further publications and for illustrated talks (Public programmes).
