Occupational Medicine Clinic The section consists of two units, namely: the Occupational Medicine Clinic and the Ergonomics Unit.

Occupational Medicine Clinic
The section gives professional advice to practitioners, employers, employees and employee representatives on various occupational health issues.

It also provides clinical occupational medicine referral services to workers with possible occupational diseases and assists with submission of compensation claims for those who qualify.
Patients should be pre-booked with the sister at 011 712 6420 / 6462. In cases where the sister is unavailable, please fill in and fax the booking sheet to the clinic.

Practitioners can send Chest x-rays for reporting to an experienced radiologist at a nominal charge. This should be arranged with the sister.

Health Hazard Evaluations
The section contributes in health hazard evaluations in collaboration with the Occupational Hygiene Section when doing follow up of patients assessed in the clinic.

Teaching and Training
The staff in the section contributes to professional development by lecturing in higher degrees and diplomas (Diploma in Occupational Health and Masters in Public Health) at different universities. Informal teaching is done in the form of workshops and seminars on topical occupational health topics of interest to labour groups, inspectors, occupational health practitioners and employers. The section also contributes to capacity building for provincial health units in providing public occupational health services.

Research
The section contributes to new knowledge by conducting own research, supervising students’ research projects and collaborating with other sections in multidisciplinary research on occupational health and safety.

Ergonomics Unit
The Ergonomics Unit conducts ergonomic related research. It performs ergonomic risk assessments at various workplaces and Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome clinical assessments of workers who operate vibrating hand tools. The unit also offers ergonomic training to occupational health practitioners and responds to queries on ergonomic issues such as manual material handling, musculoskeletal disorders, computer workstation design and layout.
